Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish celebration of light, also known as the “Festival of Lights”. During Hanukkah it is traditional to exchange greetings and gifts to bring light and joy into the dark winter days. Finding the right greeting to give someone for the holiday of Hanukkah depends on your relationship with that person, but there are some traditional and friendly greetings that are sure to fit any occasion.
Traditional Greetings
When wishing someone well on Hanukkah, the traditional greeting is “Chag Hanukkah Sameach” which translates to “Happy Hanukkah”. This is by far the most common Hanukkah greeting, but there are variations, such as “Chag Hanukkah Same’ach”, which means “Happy Hanukkah Joyfully” or “Chag Urim Sameach”, which translates to “Happy Festival of Lights”. Other variations include “Chayim K’same’ach” (“Life of Joy”), “Chag Urim V’tumin” (“Festival of Lights and Redemption”), and “Hanukkah Sameach” (“Happy Hanukkah”).
Personal Greetings
For a more personal Hanukkah greeting, say something like “May you be blessed with eight days of light and joy on Hanukkah” or “I wish you and your family many blessings and much joy this Hanukkah”. Many families also follow the traditional holiday custom of saying “L’shana tova Tikatevu” (“May you be inscribed in the book of life”) as a close and personal way to wish someone a peaceful and joyous holiday.
Gestures and Symbols
Gestures and symbols are also a great way to show someone you are thinking of them during the Hanukkah season. If you are parting, the traditional gesture is to point one finger to the person, palms facing up, and say “Chag Urim Sameach” (“Happy Festival of Lights”). In addition, the Dreidel and the Menorah are symbols of Hanukkah that can be gifted to someone you care about to wish them a joyous festival.
No matter which Hanukkah greeting you choose, it is important to remember the reason for the season – to bring light, hope, and joy into the dark winter days. Wishing someone a Happy Hanukkah with traditional and heartfelt words or symbols is a great way to spread love, joy, and peace to those around you.
