Hanukkah, also known as Chanukah or Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday that celebrates the rededication of a sacred temple and the incredible small victory of the Jewish people over the Greek army in 165 BC. According to the Talmud, when the Greeks desecrated the Temple of Jerusalem, only one vial of cucus, or pure oil, was found. Miraculously, the oil lasted for eight days, long enough to re-sanctify the temple and continue the celebration.
During the holiday, eight days of ritual, gifts, prayer and feasts are observed. One of the most popular is the traditional Hanukah Party.
A Hanukkah Party is a festive gathering held during the eight days of Hanukkah. Commonly taking place during the evening of the first night of the holiday, the party is held to celebrate the festival and to give thanks for religious freedoms and blessings.Traditional activities and decorations including gathering around a menorah (a nine-branched candelabra), spinning a dreidel (a four-sided spinning top with Hebrew letters), playing Hanukkah songs, and eating traditional Hanukkah foods such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled doughnuts).
To make a Hanukkah Party even more special, families exchange gifts with one another, which is a highlight of the holiday. Gifts could include dried fruit or other traditional treats as well as books, toys and other items that will last longer.
Hanukkah decorations such as lights, garlands and banners are also popular, as are banners and paperchains hung on walls.
Every Hanukkah party should include some kind of game, too. Popular choices include puzzles, board games, and other mentally stimulating or fun activities.
At the end of the night, each guest should have a small bag filled with goodies and treats. This is sometimes called a Hanukkah goody bag.
A Hanukkah Party is a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday and to come together with family and friends. With its traditional activities, decorations and gifts, the party is a time to remember the importance of religious freedom and to be thankful for the blessings of life.
