Hanukkah is one of the best-known and most widely celebrated Jewish holidays. It is a time of family, friends, reflection, – and of course, plenty of delicious food! But it is also a time to remember the rich history of Hanukkah and its place in Jewish culture. So, what country did Hanukkah originate?
Hanukkah originates from the Hebrew word for “dedication”, and is the remembrance of a historical miracle that occurred hundreds of years ago in the land of Israel. Its story is usually celebrated in the Jewish liturgy, played out in stories and songs. According to tradition, during the Second Temple period in the holy land of ancient Israel (2nd century BCE – 70CE), the Syrian-Greeks, led by the Seleucid King Antiochus IV, had the Jews of Israel completely under their control. In167 BCE, Antiochus IV issued a royal edict forbidding the practice of the Jewish religion, desecrating the Holy Temple in Jerusalem with idols of the Greek gods, and pressuring the Jews to sacrifice pigs on the altar of the Temple.
In response, a small group of Jews, called the Maccabees, led a revolt against the Greeks. After three years of fighting, the Maccabees emerged victorious. The victors then reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and rededicated it as a place of Jewish worship. They lit the seven-branched Menorah, but were only able to find only enough pure oil to burn for one night. A miraculous occurrence occurred and the oil that should have only lasted one day, miraculously lasted the full eight days until new oil could be prepared. Ever since then, people have been celebrating this miracle of the oil and the dedication of the Temple by observing the eight days of Chanukah.
To remember this story, Jews light one additional candle of the Menorah on each night of Chanukah for eight nights, thus observing the miracle of the oil.
In conclusion, Hanukkah originated in the land of ancient Israel in the 2nd century BCE. This Jewish holiday was created to commemorate the courage and defiance of the Maccabees against the Syrian-Greeks in their effort to restore religious freedom. Every year, Hanukkah celebrates the reclaiming and rededication of the Holy Temple and the miracle of the oil burning for eight days. The Hanukkah Menorah is lit in remembrance of these events, and the holiday is a reminder of the importance of dedication and freedom of religion in Judaism.
