The prayers that are said on each night of Hanukkah are all part of the special Hanukkah service. On the first night, as well as every subsequent night, the members of the household say the following special blessings:

1. L–Ma’an Zion (Light for Zion)
This is the blessing said as you light the Hanukkah candles. It is a prayer of hope for the nation of Israel, that they will remain strong and free.
2. She–asah Nissim or Hodu L’Adonai (A Miracle Happened or Praise the Lord)
This blessing is a thanks to God for the miracle that happened in the past and the present.
3. Na’eh Leshalom (Amen, A Prayer of Peace)
This prayer is saying in response to the previous blessing. It is asking God to make peace among all His people.
On the first night of Hanukkah:
Blessing Over the Hanukkah Candles
- Baruch Ata Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Haolam,
- Asher Kidshanu B’mitzvotav, V’tzivanu,
- L’hadlik Ner Shel Hanukkah.
Translation:
- Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, King of the Universe,
- Who has sanctified us by thy commandments, and commanding us,
- To kindle the lights of Hanukkah.
On the Second Night of Hanukkah:
Blessing Over the Hanukkah Candles
- Baruch Ata Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Haolam,
- She-asah Nissim La’avoteinu Bayamim Hahem, Bizman Hazé
Translation:
- Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, King of the Universe,
- who did miracles for our ancestors in those days, at this season.
On the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Nights of Hanukkah:
Blessing Over the Hanukkah Candles
- Baruch Ata Adonai Eloheinu Melech Haolam,
- She-hecheyanu, V’kimanu, V’higi’anu Lazman Ha-ze.
Translation:
- Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, King of the Universe,
- who has kept us alive, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this occasion.
On the Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Nights of Hanukkah:
Blessing Over the Hanukkah Candles
- Baruch Ata Adonai Eloheinu Melech Haolam,
- Shehecheyanu, V’kiy’manu, V’higi’anu Ladarkeinu.
Translation:
- Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, King of the Universe,
- who has kept us alive, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this moment.
The prayers said on each night of Hanukkah carry with them a special meaning and are a beautiful way to give thanks to God for his miracles and his unwavering love for His people.
