Hanukkah is an important festival for the Jewish people, that is celebrated for eight days. It is also known as the Festival of Lights and is celebrated by lighting a menorah to commemorate the rededication of the Temple by the Maccabees after their victory over the Syrian Greeks in 165 BCE. The Eight Days Of Hanukkah
Day One: Lighting the Menorah:
On the first night of Hanukkah, the menorah is lit with one candle. The candle for the first night is usually placed in the center of the menorah, and is often referred to as the shammash, or “helper” candle. This candle is then used to light the other candles each night of Hanukkah.
Day Two: Blessing the Candles
On the second night, two candles are lit, and a blessing is said over them. This blessing, known as the Shehecheyanu, thanks God for having sustained us to reach this point in the Hanukkah celebration.
Days Three-Seven: Lighting Progressively More Candles
On each of the following nights of Hanukkah, an additional candle is added to the menorah, until on the seventh night, all seven lights are lit.
Day Eight: Celebrating With Music and Gifts
The eighth day of Hanukkah marks the end of the celebration, and is traditionally marked with special music and the giving of small gifts to children. Additionally, many celebrants attend Synagogue services to mark the completion of the festival.
