Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight day celebration that marks the triumph of the Jewish people over the Syrian-Greeks in 165 BCE. Each day during the Hanukkah season, a new candle is lit, and friuts, small gifts and traditional foods are eaten and enjoyed. Hanukkah is a time of joy, prayer, fun and family. Every year the festival falls on a different date, depending on the Hebrew calendar. So, if you’re asking “Ok Google, When is Hanukkah this year?” the answer is easy: it will be celebrated from sundown on Thursday, December 10th in 2020 through sundown on Friday, December 18th.
The Hanukkah story dates back more than two thousand years and is a story of faith, tradition and courage. According to Jewish tradition, a band of Jewish fighters known as the Maccabees, led by Judah Maccabee, rose up against their occupiers, the Syrian-Greeks, and regained control of their temple in Jerusalem. The Syrian-Greeks had desecrated the temple, and the Maccabees were determined to honor it again. After retaking the temple, the Maccabeesrededicated it to God through a ceremony that included lighting the temple’s menorah, a multi-armed oil-burning candelabra. Unfortunately, there was only enough oil to light the menorah for one day. Miraculously, the oil lasted for eight days, and the celebration of Hanukkah began.
Today, the observance of Hanukkah includes the lighting of the menorah, sharing of presents, spinning of the dreidel and eating of traditional foods like Latkes (potato pancakes) and Sufganiyot (jelly-filled donuts). It’s a festival of joy and celebration, a time for family, friends, prayer and contemplation.
This year, Hanukkah falls on the 10th day of the Jewish month of Kislev, and the first candle of the menorah will be lit at sundown on the evening of Thursday, December 10th, 2020. Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days and will end on Friday, December 18th at sundown.
Hanukkah is an ancient celebration with a long history that continues to remain a part of Jewish life today. It’s a unique holiday that symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and the power of courage and faith. Whether you are Jewish or not, this year is the perfect opportunity to join in the celebration and learn more about Hanukkah.
