Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Light, is an eight-day holiday celebrated at the start of the Jewish month of Kislev. It is a time full of traditions and festive activities that honor the victory of the Jews over their oppressors, commemorate the miracle of the oil lasting eight days, and bless the recently-restored Temple. On the first night of Hanukkah, you should say the <strong>Blessing Over the Candles</strong>: “Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with Your commandments and commanded us to kindle the Hanukkah light.” On each subsequent night of the holiday, the <strong>Blessing After Lighting the Candles</strong> should be recited: “Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who performed miracles for our ancestors in those days, at this time.”
<h2>Eat traditional foods</h2>
No Hanukkah celebration is complete without the traditional Hanukkah foods. On the third night of the holiday, enjoy a meal of latkes (potato pancakes) and other accompaniments. On all eight nights, you can show your devotion to Hanukkah and get a good dose of carbs by snacking on sufganiyot (jelly donuts).
<h2>Play Dreidel</h2>
On each of the eight nights of Hanukkah, you should share the joy of the holiday with family and friends by playing dreidel. This traditional game is based on luck and chance and is popular with both adults and children.
<h2>Give gifts</h2>
Traditionally, Hanukkah gifts in the form of money, called gelt, are given to children. Gelt is placed inside a hanukkiah, a special Hanukkah box, to remind us of the miracle of the oil.
Through participating in these special activities, it is possible to properly celebrate Hanukkah and honor the important traditions associated with this special holiday. It is important to take time and recognize all the special moments that Hanukkah has to offer and to remind ourselves of all that Hanukkah represents. When properly celebrated, Hanukkah can be a meaningful and special holiday that will be treasured for many years to come.
