Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish festival known as the Festival of Lights. During this time, people light the eight-branched menorah (called a Chanukiah in Hebrew) and eat traditional foods associated with the holiday. Throughout the eight days, we can ask ourselves the question: How many days of Hanukkah has it been?
The holiday of Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days and nights – and counting. There are several ways to keep track of how many days of Hanukkah have been celebrated so far.
Day Counting
The first method is to simply keep track of the days as they pass by. On the first night of Hanukkah, you can note down the day and date of when you lit the menorah. You can write down these details in a journal or notebook to help you keep a running tally of how many days have passed.
Candles on the Menorah
Another way to keep track is to count the total number of candles that have been lit on the menorah. On the first night, the Shamash candle is lit, and then one additional candle is lit for each successive night. So, by the end of the first night, one candle has been lit, and by the end of the second night, two candles have been lit – and so forth. This method is a visual way to easily keep track of how many days of Hanukkah has been celebrated.
Gelt in a Bag
If you are celebrating Hanukkah with young children, you may want to use a fun way to keep track of the number of days that have passed. Often, young children are given a bag of gelt or Hanukkah coins to place in a savings bank. As each day passes, you can add a new coin to the bank – and when the bank is full, all the days of Hanukkah have been celebrated.
Counting Down
Another way to keep track of how many days of Hanukkah has been celebrated is to count down from eight. On the first night of Hanukkah, you would note down “8 nights left.” The next night, you would change it to “7 nights left” and so forth until you reach the end of Hanukkah. This method helps you and your family get an idea of how close you are to celebrating the final night.
Whether you prefer to count by days, candles, or coins, the important thing is to find a method that works for you and your family. Hanukkah is an important holiday and there are many different ways to keep track of how many days of Hanukkah have been celebrated. No matter how you decide to keep track, have a happy and memorable Hanukkah.
