Hanukkah is an annual Jewish celebration that commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Celebrated for eight days, it typically begins on the 25th day of the month of Kislev in the Jewish calendar. Lighting one candle each night, Hanukkah marks this festival of rededication by adding an extra candle – known as the shamash – and lighting eight candles each night. So how many candles do we light on each of the eight days of Hanukkah?

CANDLE COUNT FOR EACH DAY OF HANUKKAH
Day One
On the first night of Hanukkah, we light the shamash first, and then one regular Hanukkah candle. We recite the blessing over the Hanukkah candles, then light the next candle from right to left. So for the first night, just one candle is lit.
Days Two through Eight
For the next seven nights, two candles are lit on each evening; the shamash and the newest one corresponding to that particular night. On the second night, two candles are lit, on the third night three candles are lit, and so forth, until on the eighth night all eight candles are lit. We then continue to light all eight candles every night until the end of Hanukkah.
Lighting In Order
Consequently, each night of Hanukkah, one more candle is added to the Hanukkah menorah until all eight candles are lit on the final night. We continue to light all eight candles every night from left to right, starting with the newest one — corresponding to that particular night — and moving back towards the shamash.
Lighting from Right to Left
The lights should be lit from the rightmost side of the menorah towards the middle, which is where the shamash should be located. At the end of each day, the lights are extinguished from left to right except for the shamash, which remains burning. This is to ensure that the shamash is always burning so the other lights can be lit.
In conclusion, Hanukkah is a joyous celebration that lasts for eight days. On the first seven nights, one more candle is added until all eight candles are lit on the final night. Each night, the lights should be lit from the rightmost side of the menorah towards the middle, starting with the newest one and ending with the shamash. At the end of each day, the lights are extinguished from left to right, except for the shamash, which remains lit. This is to ensure that the other candles can be lit the next night.
