Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish holiday also known as the Festival of Lights, and one of the most beloved traditions is the lighting of the Hanukkah menorah. The menorah represents the miracle of the oil which burned in the ancient temple for eight days. An important part of the eight days is the lighting of the menorah, which is done by lighting a Hanukkah candle. One of the key points of confusion about the Hanukkah menorah is which direction to put the candles.

Hanukkah Candles
The direction of the Hanukkah menorah is relatively straightforward. The menorah starts with its left side, the ‘first branch’, on the right side and the ‘second branch’ on the left. This means that, on the first night, the leftmost candle will be lit. Each additional night an additional candle will be lit, moving from left to right.
In terms of the placement of the menorah in relation to the viewer or the door of the house, it should be placed such that the person looking at it can see the lights from the Candles. This means that the left side must be on the right side and the right side must be on the left side.
When lighting the candles, they should be lit from right to left as this is the same direction as reading Hebrew. This means that the Shamash candle, which is used to light the other candles, should be lit first. Once the Shamash candle is lit, the other candles can then be lit from right to left.

Traditionally Lit
When the candles are lit traditionally, with a candle lighter called a “shamash”, they are lit in the following order:

Checklist

First, light the Shamash from left to right

Then start lighting the candles from right to left

Do not forget to recite the traditional blessings for lighting the Hanukkah candles

Hanukkah candles must be lit from right to left, beginning with the Shamash candle. This allows for the tradition that the furthermost candle on the left is lit first and then each additional candle is lit from right to left. By placing the leftmost candle on the right side and the right side on the left, it allows for the easiest viewing of the lights from the candles and shows reverence to the Hebrew reading direction. Following these protocols will ensure that you light the Hanukkah candles the correct direction according to Jewish tradition.
